Best Halloween Movies to Watch With Your Family

You can celebrate Halloween all month long by watching some fun Halloween-themed movies. Personally, my family and I love gathering in our living room and putting on our favorite spooky flicks throughout October. This is a fun way to unwind and relax amidst all the Halloween chaos!

Preparing costumes, candy, and decorations is a lot of hard work. That’s why we like to sit back and enjoy this simple but enjoyable Halloween activity! So, if you're looking for family-friendly Halloween movies, I’ve got you covered. I’ll be listing some great options below.

My Favorite Halloween Movies For Families:

1. Addams Family 1 and 2

The Addams Family is a classic Halloween series! This quirky and creepy family will keep you and your kids entertained for hours. I suggest watching both movies for extra entertainment. If your kids are fans of Wednesday they will really love watching this! You can find Adams Family 1 and 2 streaming on Pluto TV for free or rent it on Amazon Prime.

2. Hocus Pocus 1 and 2

Hocus Pocus is another classic that families can enjoy together. If you’re looking for a funny Halloween movie, this could be the perfect fit for your family. This ridiculous trio of witches wreak havoc in Salem, Massachusetts, and are sure to make everyone laugh.

The second movie was recently released and my kids loved it. You can find the original and the sequel streaming on Disney Plus.

3. Casper

Younger kids might not be a fan of ghost movies, as they can get pretty scary. That’s why I recommend watching Casper the Friendly Ghost. This series is totally family-friendly and will put a smile on everyone's face.

The 1995 movie is our family's favorite version of Casper. It includes cartoon ghosts and is a total blast. There are other Casper movies to choose from. You can find them streaming on various platforms.

4. Spookley the Square Pumpkin

Spookley the Square Pumpkin is perfect for kids six and below. My kids loved this movie when they were younger. This animated movie is under an hour and it teaches kids how to be inclusive and accepting!

Spookley gets teased for being shaped differently than other pumpkins, but through the course of the movie, he learns to accept himself. I think this is a great way to celebrate Halloween and show your kids that being different is okay! You can find Spookley on YouTube for free and it's also available on Netflix.

5. Hotel Transylvania

Hotel Transylvania is one of the best Halloween franchises for kids. I even love watching these movies as the plot is pretty fun! Right now, there are three Hotel Transylvania movies available on Netflix for streaming. I definitely suggest trying these out with your family. This is a great take on Dracula and other classic monsters in animated form!

6. Monsters Inc.

This might not seem like a Halloween movie at first, but hear me out. October is all about scares and monsters. So, what better movie to watch than Monsters Inc? This Disney movie is a hit with kids of any age and it's streaming on Disney Plus. You can also watch the sequel with your kids, but I think the first movie is better for a Halloween celebration!

7. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Created by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a movie you can’t miss during Halloween! Centered on the pumpkin king Jack Skeleton, families will take a fun ride through Halloween town and hear some amazing musical numbers! Personally, I love this movie and if your kids haven’t seen it they are in for a treat! You can find The Nightmare Before Christmas on Disney Plus.

8. Monster House

Monster House is an animated movie about three friends. The trio of teens explores a haunted house and uncovers the secrets within. I suggest watching this movie with kids that are ten plus as there are a couple of jump scares. Overall this is a great movie with a lot of heart. You can watch it on Netflix.

9. Coraline

The final movie I recommend watching during Halloween is Coraline. Based on the book by Neil Gaiman, this spooky tale explores the life of a young girl who travels to another realm. Similarly to Alice in Wonderland, this movie can get creepy at times.

I suggest watching this with kids that are 9+, but if you are looking for a unique and memorable Halloween movie this fits the bill for sure! It’s currently streaming on HBO Max.

Final Thoughts on Family-Friendly Halloween Movies

There are tons of great Halloween movies available on streaming platforms like Disney Plus, Hulu, Netflix, and HBO. If you don’t want to give your kids nightmares, I suggest sticking to my curated Halloween movie list.

Watching spooky movies with your kids can be exciting for sure. Still, it’s best to show them family-friendly options that everyone can enjoy. The seven movies I listed should get you started on your Halloween movie marathon, but if you have some other favorite Halloween flicks you’d like to share please comment below.
