Everything You Need to Know Before Setting Sail on Your Disney Cruise Adventure

Today, I’m excited to share some insight into my family's upcoming trip! In March 2024, my family is setting sail on the brand-new Disney Wish cruise ship. Preparing for a Disney Cruise can be both thrilling and slightly overwhelming, especially when you’re bringing kids along for the journey.

Luckily, I'll be walking you through the essentials of planning for a magical Disney cruise. So, buckle up and get ready as I talk about everything you need to know before you set sail!

What to Bring: Your Disney Cruise Packing List

Before we get into the specifics of your trip, let’s talk about what you need to bring. You want to make sure that you have everything you need for your Disney Cruise. This way your trip is as enjoyable as possible. Each family is a little different but I think there are some must-have items you need to bring along with you:

Travel Documents: Don’t forget any important documents! Make sure you have your passports, IDs, and Disney Cruise Line reservation details in a secure folder. Have these documents ready at check-in this way you can start your trip off the right way.

Appropriate Clothing: Disney Cruise Line's dress code is usually pretty casual, but you'll want to pack both swimwear and nice outfits for dining at the restaurants on the ship. It’s also a good idea to wear comfortable shoes for walking around the ship and on any excursions.

Swim Gear: If your kids are anything like mine, they will be spending a lot of time at the pool. Make sure to pack extra swim diapers for the little one and floaties if needed. Also pack some sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses!

Day Bags: You'll want a day bag to carry essentials around with you like water, chargers, and other personal items when you're exploring the ship or on excursions.

Stroller or Baby Carrier: If you're bringing an infant, a stroller or baby carrier is a lifesaver! You’ll get around the ship much more comfortably this way.

Medications and First Aid: Pack any necessary medications and a small first-aid kit. You can never be too prepared even on vacation.

Power Strip and Adapters: There might not be enough outlets in your stateroom, and if you have a lot of devices this could be a problem. That’s why I suggest packing a small power strip and extra adapters to keep everyone's tech charged.

My Top Travel Hacks for Kids:

Traveling with kids requires a lot of extra preparation, especially when you’re going on a trip with an infant, a 10-year-old, and a 6-year-old. I’ve listed some travel hacks I’ll be using to make my Disney Cruise a little smoother. These tips should help you out too:

1. Travel With Baby Essentials

If you’re taking an infant onboard don't forget the essentials. This goes without saying but you want to pack baby food, diapers, wipes, and a stroller. Disney Cruise Line also offers pack 'n plays for free, but you can also bring your own if you want to.

2. Keep Your Kids Entertained

It’s no secret, but kids can get bored quickly, especially if they are driving or waiting in an airport. To help with this I suggest keeping your kids entertained during the journey with their favorite toys, books, and electronic devices.

4. Bring Motion Sickness Remedies

While cruises can be a ton of fun, they can also make you and your kids a little motion-sick. Consider packing motion sickness remedies like wristbands, and patches, ginger candy, and anti-nausea gummies.

5. Try Using Organizational Tools

Use over-the-door shoe organizers and magnetic hooks to keep your stateroom tidy and make items easy to get to. When you’re traveling in a group your room can get messy fast, that’s why I like to keep things organized!

6. Plan Your Dining Reservations

I highly recommend making dining reservations in advance. This way you get the times and locations that work best for your family. There are a few different options available for your family!

7. Take Advantage of Childcare Services and Activities

Disney has an amazing kids club onboard that will keep them engaged and safe. You can also check out the cruise ship schedule for activities, shows, and other extras you don’t want to miss out on. This includes things like pirate night and royal tea which all come included with your trip. You can plan all of this on Disney’s handy Navigator app!

Extra Tips and Advice For Your Disney Cruise

There is a lot to do before you leave for your Disney Cruise, but before you start packing and getting ready, I’ll give you a few extra tips for your trip. One of my biggest pieces of advice is to arrive at the port city early. This will help you avoid travel-related stress and ensure you won't miss the ship due to unexpected delays. Leave as early as you can, and if you have extra money set aside, you can even arrive a day early to prevent any travel mishaps!

It's also a good idea to invest in travel insurance for peace of mind, you might think this is unnecessary but insurance will cover any unforeseen circumstances such as trip cancellations and medical emergencies. Before you arrive at the ship, take the time to research character schedules in advance and plan to meet your kids' favorite Disney characters. These meet and greets can get crowded so don’t forget to schedule them in and bring along an autograph book so your kids can remember these magical moments!

If your cruise includes a visit to Disney's private island, Castaway Cay, be sure to book excursions and activities beforehand to secure your spot in the adventure spots that will fill up fast. Lastly, remember to have some fun! While planning is essential, leave room for spontaneity and relaxation to truly savor the Disney magic without feeling too rushed or stressed out.

Final Thoughts on Preparing For a Disney Cruise

It’s hard to think of everything you need for a big trip like this. So, hopefully, I’ve provided you with some valuable information as you prepare for your Disney Cruise. Traveling with kids can be a challenge, but there’s nothing I love more than vacationing with my whole family. We’re counting down the days until we set sail on the Disney Wish, and I can't wait to make some unforgettable memories at sea!

As a mother, I understand the importance of a well-organized and memorable trip, and that’s why I think it's so important to share this information with you all. So, get ready to pack your bags, make those dining reservations, and go on the adventure of a lifetime.
