Unforgettable Holiday Outfits for Stunning Family Photos

As the holiday season rolls around, one of the most exciting traditions in our family is our annual family photo shoot. We started this tradition when my oldest son was a year old and ever since then, people look forward to our holiday cards every year. 

We love gathering together, with our best outfits, and create memories that we’ll cherish for years to come. However, choosing the right outfits can sometimes feel like a daunting task, especially when you want everyone to look good while still feeling comfortable. 

Over the years, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks for selecting the best holiday outfits for family photos that not only look great but also reflect our family’s personality.

For our recent photo shoot, we opted for classic red and green, with some neutral tones thrown in. This combination perfectly captured the holiday spirit while allowing each family member to express their style. 

You could also consider soft pastels for a more modern look, or rich jewel tones like navy and burgundy for a touch of elegance.

Mix Textures and Patterns

While it’s essential to have a cohesive color palette, mixing textures and patterns can add depth and interest to your photos. I love incorporating different fabrics like knits, denim, and cotton to create visual appeal.

For example, one year, I chose a cozy knit sweater in cream for myself, paired with a plaid shirt for my husband, while the kids wore flannel shirts with jeans. The textures made the photos feel warm and inviting, perfect for the holiday season. 

If you’re worried about patterns clashing, consider choosing one patterned item (like a plaid shirt) and keeping the rest solid to balance it out.

Consider where you’ll be taking your photos when selecting outfits. For instance, if you’re planning an outdoor shoot in a snowy landscape, think about wearing layers that not only keep you warm but also look stylish. 

You can always dress everyone in layers. The kids can wear thermal tops under their flannel shirts. Accessories like scarves and hats not only added warmth but also can also enhance your overall look. If you’re shooting indoors, you can opt for lighter fabrics and more formal attire.

Casual Chic Outfits

If you’re going for a casual family photo shoot, you can still look put together without being overly formal. I love the idea of coordinating outfits that are comfortable yet stylish, especially when kids are involved!

For a relaxed vibe, I often choose a combination of well-fitted jeans, stylish sneakers, and casual tops. For instance, last year, you can wear matching graphic tees with a holiday theme layered under cardigans, paired with jeans and boots. The casual look will make your photos feel more genuine and fun while capturing your family’s spirit.

Elegant Formal Attire

Sometimes, it’s nice to dress up a bit more for family photos, especially if you’re planning to use them for holiday cards or special announcements. Formal attire doesn’t have to mean stuffy, though! I love choosing outfits that are elegant yet still allow for some movement.

For our formal photo shoot a couple of years ago, we opted for a dressier look. I wore a one shoulder black dress that complimented my husband’s navy suit. The kids were dressed in matching outfits. My sonS sported a crisp white shirt with navy suspenders. The result was a polished and timeless family photo that we’ll cherish for years.

Accessorize Wisely

Accessories can elevate your family’s holiday outfits and add personality to your photos. I often recommend adding scarves, hats, or statement jewelry that tie back into your color palette. 

For our last holiday a few years ago, I accessorized with a nice hat  in a complementary shade, while the kids wore nice sweaters.. My husband finished his look with a burgundy sweater. These little touches made a big difference in pulling our looks together and adding that holiday flair.

Don’t Forget the Kids

When it comes to kids’ outfits, comfort is key! I always prioritize clothes that allow them to move freely, especially since we all know how energetic kids can be during photo shoots. 

Consider dressing your kids in comfy sweater dresses and soft leggings, which will allow them to play and move while still looking adorable. I also recommend letting them have a say in their outfits. 

Consider the Entire Family

If you have pets, consider including them in the family photos too! Coordinating their outfits with yours can add a fun twist to the shoot. I’ve seen families dress their dogs in holiday-themed sweaters or bandanas that match their own outfits. 

Here’s an idea, buy  a festive red bowtie that will match.. It will make for some adorable shots and add an extra layer of fun to your family photos.

Plan Ahead for Comfort

Comfort is essential, especially when you’re taking family photos. I recommend planning outfits well in advance, so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. This gives everyone time to try on their clothes and make any necessary adjustments.

For instance, I usually lay out our outfits the night before the shoot, ensuring that everything fits well and is clean. 

This way, the morning of the photo shoot is stress-free, allowing us to enjoy the experience instead of worrying about wardrobe malfunctions!

Capture the Moments

Finally, remember that the best holiday photos are the ones that capture the moments. While it’s great to have perfectly coordinated outfits, what truly matters is the love and connection shared during the shoot. 

I always try to remind my kids to have fun and be themselves, even if it means a few silly poses or unexpected giggles.

During our recent photo shoot, we decided to let loose and have some fun, capturing candid moments of laughter between posed shots. These authentic moments often turn out to be the most cherished images that showcase our family’s personality.
