Adapting to Life as a Family of Five

When my daughter arrived, our household dynamics shifted tremendously. Suddenly, the routines we had perfected with our two boys were shifting due to the unpredictable needs of an infant.

Those early days were a blur of sleepless nights, endless feedings, and trying to remember how we managed this phase of parenting before.

I found myself constantly juggling the needs of a newborn with the schedules of two older children, who had their own schoolwork, and are heavily involved in sports in our community.

If I’m honest, the emotional adjustment was tougher than I anticipated.  I had grown accustomed to the level of independence my sons had achieved at ages 9 & 6.

You forget how nice it is for a child to be able to tell you when they want or need something, LOL!

We were also making sure we are instilling essential life skills every elementary child should learn.

The sudden shift back to the all-consuming demands of a baby was very overwhelming.

There were moments of guilt where I felt torn between my baby’s needs and not wanting my boys to feel neglected.

Despite the challenges, there are countless moments of joy.

Knowing that our daughter is our last baby has made me appreciate the “last” firsts even more. Her first smile, first coo, first time rolling over, each milestone feels bittersweet, knowing it’s the last time we’ll experience these moments.

Despite the exhaustion, I find myself soaking it all in because I know how fleeting this stage is.

I have to admit that this transition has also helped me grow as a parent.

I’ve had to develop new strategies, embrace flexibility, and dig deep to find a certain level of patience and strength.

It’s taught me to be more present, to appreciate the small moments, and to let go of the notion of “perfection” (I think all moms are guilty of this at some point).

Parenting is messy and unpredictable, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has also been incredibly difficult this time.

I started off strong, but soon discovered that many of the foods I was eating were causing my daughter to break out, which in turn decreased my milk supply.

At her two-month appointment, the pediatrician mentioned her weight was very low and recommended fortifying her milk.

I felt so defeated. The most important thing was her health and happiness, but I couldn’t help but wonder what I was doing wrong.

I breastfed my boys for a whole year without any issues and even produced enough milk to feed five other babies.

Midlife Pivot

I have worked in the healthcare space for over 15 years but about 3 years ago, I started to feel a strong pull towards something different. The desire for a new challenge, a new way to make an impact, and a new creative outlet led me to blogging.

It’s a space where I can be my authentic self, explore new topics, and engage with a broader audience.

Over the years, I’ve realized that I have a passion for writing and sharing my stories related to motherhood.

Blogging allows me to combine my love for writing with my desire to connect with people on a different level.

It’s a platform where I can share my experiences, insights, and thoughts in a more personal and creative way.

Motherhues 2.0

When I decided to pursue blogging, my husband jumped at the opportunity to assist on the technical end by setting up my domain and website. He works in IT and has dabbled in web design for well over 20 years.

He built the first site on the platform he was most familiar with, Wix.com. We launched MotherHues in August 2022.

The blog was not achieving the goals I set for it. This next part lets you know God is always watching.

While browsing Threads, my husband saw a thread from someone posting about how successful they were with blogging.

While reading through the thread, he discovered that that individual worked with TaKenya Hampton, owner of  Studio117Creative

What a godsend this interaction turned out to be. After a video consultation, we decided to sign on for a complete overhaul of MotherHues into the site that you see today!

But it wasn’t enough to just focus on the aesthetic of the site. In the time away from posting, I was able to learn the ins and outs of running a successful blog.

I was able to focus on topics such as SEO and how to properly structure content to give you, our readers, the best possible experience with MotherHues.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Okay, enough of my babbling LOL.

MotherHues 2.0 has been completely rebuilt with a fresh layout and features that allow me to better connect with each of you on this journey through motherhood.

So, what can you expect from the new MotherHues? More engaging content, including practical tips and heartfelt stories from my own experiences, expert advice to help you navigate the challenges of motherhood, and a supportive community where you can share and learn from other moms.

We’ve also added new interactive features to make your experience even more enjoyable and helpful.

Thank you for being part of our community. Here’s to new beginnings, shared experiences, and the joy of motherhood!

Until next time,

Kirsten
